The Harmonizing Among Multicultural Societies; Based on The Six Religious Leaders Perspective in Medan City
Abstract
Different yet one is the slogan of the Indonesian state made up of thousands of islands, languages, cultures and 6 different religions. harmony in difference. This research was conducted in the city of Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Medan is one of the largest provinces of Indonesia, which is very multicultural with its culture, ethnicity and religion but able to remain harmonious and coexist with the existing diversity. This makes Medan a unique and interesting research location compared to other places. The purpose of this study is to see how the harmonization of Islam is in the midst of the multicultural city of Medan with the majority of the population being Muslims followed by Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The data was collected through direct interviews with the six religious’ leaders. All interviews and results were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman technique. The results of the data processing show that (1) the harmonization of other religions by the Religious Harmony Forum, (2) tolerance and mutual respect between religious followers, (3) the involvement of religious leaders in maintaining the harmony of religious harmony in the city Medan.
